Chapter 16: Alchemy?

And here we are, inside of another massive room under the castle’s courtyard. We entered through a stone passageway that was very well concealed near the old archery range. There were guards as soon as we went one floor down. They stood in front of two sets of wooden doors. Since being in the keep, every guard has been a Vampiric Royal Knight dressed in either dark purple or black plate mail armor. The knights in black followed the traditional Alvernia plate mail that consisted of several large pieces. The knights in purple had a new style of plate mail that had many small pieces overlapping each other. This new style allowed for much more flexibility for the knight’s joints, arms and legs… but also opened them up to a blade sliding underneath or an arrow squeaking inside where they were layered.

The four down here were wearing purple, suggesting they were among the higher ranks under Queen Rina. This time, however, they weren’t wielding huge two-handed broadswords or claymores… they were holding long pikes that looked as if someone pieced together a spear and an axe. Thinking along combat lines, those weapons would be highly ill-advised underground and in tight corridors. One swing is more likely to hit a wall or some other obstruction than your opponent. This makes it seem like the vampires like uniformity more than situationally based tactics. If it were me, I would have had these knights trained on short swords, daggers, or short spears.

Zina had also changed her attire before meeting us down to meet us. Now, she looked like a sketchy back-alleyway broker trying to pawn off dying slaves or other such merchandise for a quick return. She had on a brown overcoat, high black boots, black leather pants, a thick leather belt, and a type of hat I’ve not run across before. Perhaps it was a style the vampires use underground? It was plaid with a small bill with the top of it almost going to the front of the bill. The hat didn’t have curved sides on it like what Regar and the other estranged mercenaries out of Fort Bartad wore. She even had long black gloves on over her sharp nails. To sum up her weird look… she was in an almost entirely black leather attire with a weird hat, coat, and belt on that didn’t go with it at all. When she moved around, I could even see slots on the belt where there were vials of liquid.

Shion surprised me when she brought her old staff that she normally leaves on her horse. It’s hard to tell if she brought it because her guard was up or what. I still don’t fully understand the difference between bare-handed casting, casting with a wand, and casting with a staff. Marleen used to ramble during our pillow talk sessions about such things, and now, I wish I paid more attention. I think it has to do with how quickly the mages
